Internet Technologies Department

The Department has been active in the development of Internet networks and infrastructure for research since the mid seventies. A modest sized web document could not reasonably summarize the different fields of experiences and results, so we will focus only the recent results and ask our readers to please contact us with further questions. Services we provide are characterized by the quality. Some of the activities are: IP network operation and management, software distribution and support, management of distributed network services, consultancy, networking project management and networking system design and implementation.

The department has carried out several successful projects in the past and has always been in the center of excellence of networking within Hungary. The department focuses on infrastructure for research since the mid seventies.

Providing and Managing of IP network infrastructures:

• The operation of the Hungarian Nation Information Infrastructure Development (NIIF) backbone infrastructure (HBONE) - the Hungarian research network backbone
• The network management of the Hungarian Inter-Ministerial network belongs
• The establishment and management virtual private network for a Hungarian Ministry

Technologies used include MPLS, multicast, VPN, ATM, SNMP, web based management, etc.

• The department manages or has managed application services for many organizations as far away as in the United States application service provider. Here in Hungary the National Information Infrastructure is managed by us.
• Several distributed network applications are managed by the department for the research and commercial communities (USENET news, web caching, DNS, mail, pop3, SMTP, PGP key service, several WEB servers, list distribution, etc.)
• The software distribution and support covers introduction of solutions from Microsoft, Solaris and Compaq, Process Software are represented by SZTAKI in Hungary.  The excellent mail and directory (PMDF and IDS) products from Process Software Corporation are represented and supported in Hungary by the department
• Consultancy has always been a central task of the department. Commercial customers were always looking forward to working together with independent partners, whose judgment is not influenced by commercial interests. Several institutions have been supported by our department: MATÁV, MKB, OTP, EuroWeb, PanTel, OMFB (The Ministry of Education), MEH (The Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office), etc. We participated in preparation of long term projects of the Hungarian government like the National Computer Services Strategy of Hungary (NIS), etc.
• The staff of the department has gained experience in several leading edge international networking projects: EARN, PHARE, Europanet, TEN-34, TEN-155, Quantum. We were recently involved in the central European deployment of GEANT gigabit pan-European research infrastructure.
• The department carried out a number of networking system designs and implementations. The design of networking solutions has always been a strength of the department. The ability of solving design tasks is the result of the long experience in working in the networking field.
• Being commercially neutral the Department is called upon to write the "call for tenders" for different government and industrial organizations.   
• We established the high speed (STM-1, E3) nation wide IP network of the Hungarian research community
• Application services operation for an US based company whose customer base is spread around the world
• The establishment and management an MPLS based IP VPN for a Hungarian Ministry
