Projects/Publications

In 1991 MTA SZTAKI (The Hungarian acronym for "The Computer and Automation Research Institute, Hungarian Academy of Sciences") established the Research Institute to focus on basic research related to Computing, Control, Communication, and Intelligence. Fundamentally the Institute is concerned with basic research, the activity contributes significantly to the possibility of providing development and consulting services. In 1997 the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in their wisdom, merged the Research Institute for Measurement and Computer Techniques (MSZKI) research into MTA SZTAKI. The consolidated Institute was divided into two distinct groups: the Development Division and the Research Division.

The fundamental task of the Institute is to perform basic and application oriented research and do development in an interdisciplinary setting in the broad fields of computer science, engineering, information technology, intelligent systems, process control, wide-area networking and multimedia.

The 1997 consolidation created a broad based, multidisciplinary Institution doing research, development and teaching. As well, the Institute gained a decisive role in Hungary’s IT-related research that requires the interdisciplinary teamwork of a large number of scientists in multidisciplinary setting. The strength of the Institute made it possible for the different groups to participate significantly in the Fifth framework programme of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration activities (1998 - 2002). MTA SZTAKI is just as successful in the current Sixth Framework Program (2002-2006) of the European Community.

Some of the Departments have created flyers describing the group and its activities. These brochures will give a picture of the wealth knowledge at the Institute and hopefully will lead to further cooperative projects at the department level.

Publishing with peer acceptance (refereed publishing) is an important element of scientific research. Most new products and process can be traced back to scientific research. The subjects of these publications foster new technology or eve whole new industries. The information in these publications help to improve human condition, create economic growth and enhance global stability and security.

It takes time for scientific discovery to prove its worth. Often, at the time of their discovery, their value is not seen or understood. The telephone and the television were both rejected when they were first introduced. It is in the face of this cynicism that scientists continue to work and publish.
