Project Description

Increasing demands of advanced scientific research can be fulfilled only by exploiting existing resources in a more efficient way by means of on-the-fly coupling and dynamic on-demand allocation of resources. Grid technology aims to provide a solution for this problem. In long term, the ultimate goal is that any information technology related resource or service can be accessible for the Hungarian researchers via the Internet just as Web services are available for everybody nowadays.

In order to ensure that Hungary will not drop behind in this important area, a proper Grid infrastructure must be established in Hungary that would be accessible at the same quality level for all scientists and researchers independently of the physical locations of their institutes. Such Grid will first consists of homogeneous local Grid systems established within and between Hungarian universities, colleges and research institutes and it will be extended towards a heterogeneous global system later on.

Grid systems available currently in the world are still in research phase and Grid related research is supported intensively in all the world and especially in the 6th Framework program of the European Union. Thus, it is a must for the Hungarian computer science researchers to be involved in this research area. The aim of this project is to perform result driven research within the next three years with a potential of building a nation wide Grid infrastructure in Hungary and to help in dissemination of Grid technology. Research works to be performed within this project are related to the following tasks:

  • Establishment of heterogeneous local and global Grid systems („Grid islands") in Hungary
    • Within the universities, colleges and research institutes of the Academy
    • Among the universities, colleges and research institutes of the Academy
  • Contribution to the further development of the Hungarian ClusterGrid
  • Elaboration of the SuperGrid system
  • Elaboration of a Jini based Grid system
  • Elaboration of a high-level user interface to ensure seamless and uniform access method for the users to all the three different Grid islands
  • Design and implementation of interfaces to make possible the different Grid islands to co-operate on he basis of the international standard Open Grid Service Architecture

Tasks related directly to the Hungarian Grid infrastructure are as follows:

  1. Elaboration of the proper technology to build local Grid islands at the Hungarian universities and research institutes, especially concentrating ont he following research areas:
    • Grid information system
    • Grid job manager
    • Grid broker
    • Grid security system
    • Grid monitoring system
    • Handling of data int he Grid
    • User interface for the Grid
  2. Design and implement solution the different Grid islands to co-operate on he basis of the international standard Open Grid Service Architecture

Support activities for the Hungarian research community:

  1. Observation of the international trends in Grid research and their adaptation into the Hungarian Grid systems
  2. Propagation of Grid technology in Hungary by organizing "Best practice" projects
  3. Establishment of various Grid systems for specific scientific areas like
    • Chemist Grid
    • Biologist Grid
    • Physicist Grid
  4. Organisaton of collaborative Grid projects among various scientific areas
  5. Professional support for organising and coordinating Hungarian Grid projects
  6. Propagation of Grid technology in Hungary (courses and dissemination days)

Tasks related to international co-operations:

  1. Maintaining connections to national Grid research initiatives of other countries
  2. Representation of Hungarian interests on various EU panels
  3. Supporting the participation of Hungarian partners in EU funded research projects
  4. Representation of Hungary within the Central European Grid Consortium
